- Nucleus
- The tiny, dense center of the atom, made of protons and neutrons.
- Electron
- A tiny negatively charged particle that moves around the nucleus. A neutral atom has as many electrons as protons.
- Proton
- A positively charged particle in the nucleus. Carbon has 6, and the number of protons decides the element.
- Neutron
- A particle with no charge in the nucleus. This carbon atom (carbon-12) has 6.
- Electron shell
- An energy level electrons occupy. The first shell holds up to 2 electrons; carbon has 4 more in its second shell.
